Despite Anne Hathaway’s recent claims, Christopher Nolan doesn’t ban chairs from set, according to a spokesperson for the director.
Anne Hathaway, who worked with Christopher Nolan on multiple films, claimed the director bans chairs on his sets. However, a recent statement made by one of Nolan’s spokespeople tells a different story.
Shared by IndieWire, a statement made by spokesperson Kelly Bush Novak said that Nolan has only ever banned cigarettes and cell phones from his sets. “The chairs Anne was referring to are the directors chairs clustered around the video monitor, allocated on the basis of hierarchy not physical need,” she added. Novak also said that while Nolan doesn’t use chairs on set, the film’s cast and crew are welcome to.

Hathaway appears in Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises and Interstellar. The former released in 2012, while the latter premiered in 2014. Both films showed massive success at the box office, with The Dark Knight Rises becoming the seventh-highest-grossing film ever at the time of its release. (It has since been pushed down to #30.)
Some of Nolan’s other films include 2000’s Memento, 2005’s Batman Begins, 2006’s The Prestige and 2008’s The Dark Knight. His latest film, Tenet, is set to release in August 2020 after previously being delayed several times due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Meanwhile, another one of Nolan’s films, Inception, will have a theatrical re-release on July 31.

Tenet stars John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Kenneth Branaugh, Dimple Kapadia, Martin Donovan, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Himesh Patel, Clémence Poésy, Denzil Smith and Michael Caine. The film is set for a theatrical release on Aug. 12.
