A few months after graduation, a young man has a plan. He spent the first half of his summer making a bank, and now he’s ready to break it … and break some hearts in the business! But in the course of just three weeks, you will come to love and understand these girls and choose one with whom to be in this comic drama about coming of age.
Dōkyūsei is a key classic in the dating simulator genre that first surprised Japan in 1992. This updated remake adds HD art, optional modern features, and, for the first time, a global release. There is virtually no real “story” here. You’re just a guy who spends the rest of the summer vacation playing and trying to catch some girls. No big dramas, no twists, none of that – just constant dates with girls and maybe a little character building for each one, especially towards the end.
It seemed to me that this approach was good and bad. It’s good because it gives a lot of interactivity. Not only are you sitting and junk mail coming in a lot, but you’re constantly moving around, interacting with the environment and different CGs, and choosing which characters you want to talk to in the minute of the game. As someone who plays a lot of visual novels, it was refreshing to have this sense of control.
That said, it comes with one major drawback: a mediocre main story. If you’re not a fan of any character’s story? Well, there really is nothing to do but look for another character. They are barely united and not even the individual characters are worth it to them. Some characters only have a few events, and as such, they have very underdeveloped personalities, background stories, all of that. This leads to the relationship being forced, cheap and just to fill a specific archetype.
