Despite already struggling to meet production targets, luxury EV maker Lucid has now issued a recall for the Air over potential issues stemming from the car’s wiring.
In a recent post on the NHTSA website spotted by Lucid Insiders, a summary for the recall says unsecured wires on 2022 Air vehicles could cause the car’s displays to turn off. And because the Air’s displays contain critical information, including speed, range and warning indicators, doing so would pose a hazard that violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.
The message states that the potential number of affected vehicles is 1,117. That means, since Lucid has delivered fewer than 1,000 cars to date, the recall appears to affect all 2022 Air Dream Edition and Grand Touring models. For potentially affected owners, you can get more information by calling Lucid Customer Service at 1-888-995-8243 and quoting the recall number NCR-22-01-0.
Official notification letters are scheduled for June 20. Meanwhile, the NHTSA says Lucid dealers are responsible for inspecting vehicles and resolving the issue if necessary, for vehicles subject to the recall.
Going forward, Lucid Insiders claims the company has already started making adjustments to the glass hood of new vehicles to avoid problems with unsecured wires. But perhaps the bigger concern is that this recall comes just a few months after Lucid recalled 200 cars because they had front strut dampers that may have been incorrectly installed by a supplier. And with reservations for the Air now exceeding 25,000 vehicles, fixing any issues will be hugely important if Lucid hopes to be able to deliver those vehicles on time.
Update, 25/5/22 3:35 PM ET: A Lucid spokesperson has given Engadget an official statement regarding the recall, which you can see below.
“The safety of our customers and their families is a top priority for Lucid. Lucid is recalling certain model year 2022 Lucid Air vehicles due to the possibility that the wiring to the instrument panel may not have been properly secured during installation. The recall affects 1,117 vehicles delivered to customers and the defect is estimated to be present in 1% of vehicles Lucid has no instances where these components have failed in a vehicle or caused an instrument panel malfunction.”
