NYC SPIRALS: AOC Says $1B Cut for NYPD Not Enough, ‘Defunding Police Means Defunding Police’

BREAKING: As Crime Spirals Out of Control, De Blasio Unveils *$1 BILLION* Funding Cut for NYPD

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio unveiled a $1 billion funding cut for the NYPD Monday; saying the money should be spent on other programs like Community Affairs and social services.

“My office presented to City Council a plan that would achieve the billion in savings for the NYPD and shift resources to young people, to communities in a way that would help address a lot of the underlying issues that we know are the cause of so many problems in our society,” he said.

“We’re in a whole different situation in fact than New York City has ever faced in our history – a health care crisis, an economic crisis, a disparity crisis, a budget crisis all wrapped into one and on a massive, massive scale,” he said. “We’ve gotta focus on those basics health, safety, food, shelter.”

“The NYPD is being treated clearly in a specific manner. A number of agencies are being cut quite a bit, but we’re dealing with a specific reality with the NYPD unquestionably,” he said, when asked how cuts to the police department compared to those of other agencies.

CHOP NYC? Protesters Camp Out in Front of City Hall, Demand $1 BILLION in Cuts to NYPD

Protesters camped-out for 48-hours in front of New York’s City Hall Thursday; demanding $1 billion in funding cuts for the NYPD as demonstrators demand “police reform” across the United States.

“Protesters in New York City spent a second straight night camped out in front of City Hall to demand a $1 billion cut to the police department’s budget. The group of about 100 protesters, calling themselves ‘Occupy City Hall,’ gathered at a nearby park around 5 p.m. Tuesday and haven’t left. They have vowed to stay until their demand to slash one-sixth of the New York Police Department’s $6 billion budget is met,” reports Fox News.

“Mayor (Bill) de Blasio has thus far rejected this demand, which is unconscionable,” VOCAL-NY, the group organizing the protest, said in a written statement. “We have questions about City Council promises to support our demands, because we have not seen their plan outside of a vague press release. We view this lack of transparency and specific public commitments as a red flag.”

“Strong communities make safe communities, and police don’t, and so that’s what we’re fighting for,” he said.
